Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital expansion

Big things are in store for our local hospital! The Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital expansion was recently announced after the hospital board approval a $140 million project in early January.

In the news

The Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital expansion plans include construction of a new intensive care unit (ICU), new emergency and trauma center and a new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

According to reports, the expansion will make Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital the region’s largest and most advanced emergency and trauma center.

It will also greatly increase the NICU space as well as the ICU. Moreover, the new spaces will allow medical care teams to provide more efficient care in a state-of-the-art facility.

The hospital’s investment fund, established 20 years ago, will provide a majority of the funding. Additional funding will come from generous philanthropic gifts.

More about the project

Benefits will be seen early on from the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital expansion. For starters, it will create a variety of construction jobs throughout the next few years.

Then an estimated 125 to 150 news job will be created once construction is complete. If all goes accordingly, construction on the new four-story tower should begin later this year. The projected completion date is tentatively early 2025.

In the meantime, the current ER and NICU will begin renovations while remaining operational.

The city announced the closing of West Fourth Avenue to help with the flow of construction. The hospital addition will be located on the north side of the existing building.

Residents should note as of January 6th, the emergency center parking lot is closed for construction too. Patients and visitors can now park on the first level of the adjacent parking deck.
